The Digital Stamp Card for Your Ice Cream Shop

Your season is short, so the card needs to fill in one summer, not three. Here's how to build a stamp card that brings families and passersby back for more.

Why Your Ice Cream Shop Runs on Regulars

Ice cream is an impulse buy. Hardly anyone plans in the morning to grab a scoop that afternoon. It happens when the sun comes out, when a walk takes someone past your window, or when the kids start whining. That’s exactly what makes regulars so valuable: when a family always ends their evening walk at your counter, it’s stopped being a random choice and become a ritual. Rituals carry you through the summer.

The second issue is the clock. Your season runs roughly from March to October, then it’s over. That leaves you only a few months to turn first-time visitors into regulars. A loyalty scheme that only pays off after a year does you no good: by then summer’s long gone. Everything here has to build faster than it would for the café down the street that’s open all year.

Then there’s the competition on the sidewalk. The next ice cream shop or gelateria is often only a couple hundred metres away, and the decision gets made mid-stroll. A visible reason to stop at your counter instead (the card’s nearly full) tips that gut decision in your favor.

The Right Reward for Your Ice Cream Shop

For ice cream, the target can be low, and there’s a concrete reason for that: the card should fill up within one season, not spread across three summers. Five stamps is the right number here. Someone who stops by once a week over summer reaches the reward in about five weeks, still right in the middle of the warm season, when the extra scoop means the most.

Two things worth working out for yourself:

  • What does the scoop actually cost you? An extra scoop costs you the ingredients, not the menu price. For ice cream that’s cents, not euros. In return, you get a guest who’s chosen you five times on purpose. That’s the cheapest advertising you’ll ever run.
  • Does five match your rhythm? Ten stamps like a café would be wrong here: a family that only gets ice cream on Sundays would need almost the whole summer to fill it. Five feels within reach, and that’s half the effect. For help finding the right stamp count for your shop, see the guide to choosing your stamp count.

“One extra scoop” works so well because everyone gets it instantly and it fits the product: the reward is more ice cream, not some unrelated voucher.

How It Works at Your Counter

The flow has to hold up during the peak-summer rush, or it’s no use to you:

  1. The QR code sits at the serving window or by the till, right where people wait and pick a flavor anyway. Your customer scans it with their camera, taps “Add,” and the card lands in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. No app download, no account. That’s plenty of time for the kids to argue over chocolate versus strawberry.
  2. At checkout, they hold up the pass for a second, and your team scans it in the Treuly app. One scan per visit, no matter how many scoops or kids are involved.
  3. Card full? The extra scoop unlocks automatically and gets redeemed with a scan next time, or saved for later if they’d rather wait.

One line for your team, always the same: “Collecting stamps with us? One scan, and your fifth round earns an extra scoop.”

What the Digital Card Does Better Than Paper at an Ice Cream Shop

  • It survives the summer, and the winter too. A paper card in a swim-jacket pocket is soaked through or gone by September. The digital card lives on the phone and turns up again next spring with the same stamp count, right when your season starts over.
  • A hot day gets a lever. When it’s forecast to hit 32°C in the morning, a push message to every cardholder (“Heatwave special today: this round counts double”) lands straight on the lock screen, right when people are already thinking about ice cream.
  • You finally see when your season is actually humming. With Treuly Pro, the dashboard shows how many cards are in circulation and how often they’re stamped, instead of guessing whether it was a good summer.
  • No reprinting in spring. No stack of cards to order at the start of the season; you change the design and promotions right in the app. Out of the 67 templates, you’ll find a summery card design that fits your shop in minutes.

Questions from your industry

Quick answers.

My season only runs from March to October. Does the card expire over winter?
Not unless you want it to. The card sits in the wallet and just waits out the winter on your guests' phones. Come March, the stamp count is still there, whereas a paper card would've been gone long before that. If you'd rather everyone start fresh at the beginning of the season, you can set an expiry date too. Both are just a toggle in the app.
On hot days the line gets long and the kids take forever to choose a flavor. Does stamping slow things down?
No. Stamping happens at checkout, once the scoops are already in the cone. Your customer holds up the wallet pass for a second, your team scans it on the iPhone, quicker than counting out change. And if the connection drops in the rush, the stamp just queues up and gets added automatically once you're back online.
A lot of my guests are people out for a walk or tourists who only ever come once. Is this even worth it?
The card isn't for the tourist who strolls past the harbor one time. It's for the family from the neighborhood who ends their Sunday walk at your counter. They're coming back regardless, and five stamps to an extra scoop gives them a reason to pick your shop over the one two streets down. One-time visitors who never return cost you nothing: no scan, no card, no effort.
Kids often pay with pocket money and don't have their own phone. Does the card still work?
Sure. The card lives on mom or dad's phone. They're standing right there anyway, and they're usually the one paying. One scan per ice cream round, no matter how many kids are licking away at their cones. That turns the family outing into a stamp, and the extra scoop at the end is exactly the kind of reward kids get most excited about.
